Baseball has been very good for the Cubs so far this season. The Cubs have maintained a lead in the NL Central since the season began, and still maintain one of the best records in the entire league. Every test that has come the Cubs way they have passed, from dealing with ailing players like Kerry Wood and Alfonso Soriano, to staving off divisional rivals like the Brewers and Cardinals as well as inner-city rivals, AL Central powerhouse, the White Sox. With all of this success, the Chicago Cubs have been able to kick back, relax, and get comfortable with a usually three-to-six-game lead in the division. Maybe too comfortable. |

In the wake of the Cubs finding themselves in a remarkably tight division race, scouts and managers have looked in one of the directions that has given them the most hope: South Bend, Indiana, home of Charlie Weiss and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish recently gave the team the lanky dreamboat Jeff “I’m Usually Taller Than You” Samardzija, an All-American wide receiver while playing football for the Irish. Samardzija, while perhaps more talk than walk, throws an impressive 97 M.P.H. fastball that has many in the major league saying, “Wow, you know he used to play football?” Which is subsequently followed by “Yeah, I did. He was really good at that sport, and now he’s slightly above mediocre and slightly below above-average at this one.” |

As of late, Brett Favre, former Green Bay Packers quarterback, has been in the news with the idea that maybe he isn't ready to call it quits yet. Yep, that's right, for another year Mr. Favre has said that it was his last game, cried his eyes out on national television, leaving us all to believe we would no longer see the "legend of a quarterback back" playing. Well turns out just like Tiger Wood's on a Sunday afternoon, Brett Favre wants to make a comeback, or at least that is the rumor. |

July 6, 2008 was a black day for Cubs' nation. Despite beating the Cardinals and winning the best-of-three series against their divisional rivals, a solemn cloud hung heavy over the hearts of the Second City faithful. The first-place Cubs, wrought with talent, heart and moxie, were altogether snubbed by All-Star voters across the nation. A paltry seven players were selected for the mid-season contest, and this action begs the question: Why not the entire roster? |

Webster's defines an All Star as: “composed wholly or chiefly of stars or of outstanding performers or participants”. Now, as I looked over this year’s rosters, I was ready to throw out my red flag and call for a replay on some of the players who were voted in. Not only do I already think the all-star game holds too much value in the fact that the winner gets home field advantage in the playoffs, but now it’s becoming more a joke to who is getting in the game. That right there, is something that really bothers me. How can an exhibition game where the fans pick the players actually mean how the World Series will be won? You have a bunch of 12 year old kids getting online and voting 25 times for Derrick Jeter because that is the jersey mom bought them for Christmas. I find it completely wrong and it takes away from the teams that finish with the strongest records. Bud Selig really dropped the ball on that call. When the change of the guard comes along and Selig steps down, that rule should be one of the first to go! |
