Overall, the coaching staff has earned a C- grade for the 2007 season. Their inability to adjust during the game, coupled with horrific offensive play calling has doomed them all year. Now of course the most important decision Smith will have to make fittingly involves the Quarterback. Although Orton and Griese are under contract, Rex Grossman’s contract ends after the 2007 season and it seems the Bears won’t play the dog and pony show with him next year. When the Bears become mathematically eliminated, will they have the smarts to take a look at Orton? They pretty much know what they are getting out of Griese. However, Orton did win 10 games as a rookie, showed poise, and was not as mistake prone as the Bears usual suspects. Why not see what he has in the tank? Anything less would be uncivilized. No matter what, the Bears have to draft a QB in the upcoming draft. It is mandatory the Bears place him in the endless Quarterback Carousel. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Grossman goes on the tear for the remainder of the season? I wonder if the Bears will attempt to sign him on a short term deal? He could get a 2 year 6 million dollar deal if he struts his stuff which is nothing for a starting QB in the NFL. The Bears will then be in the same situation they are in now. Shuffling Quarterbacks hoping find a hero who will take punishment while running an ineffective offense.

Since it seems the Bears are neck deep in quick sand up at Halas Hall, the future looks pretty grim for the Chicago Bears playoff hopes. Although not mathematically eliminated, I believe we all know the writing is on the wall. One man I do not envy is Lovie Smith. He needs to make the correct moves in the off season. If not, he will be playing tag along with Dick Jauron, and Dave Wanstat.
