It was just a matter of time that Ken Griffey Jr. would hit his first home run with the Chicago White Sox and move up the home run ladder, passing Sammy Sosa.
Griffey hit one of Chicago's four homers to move into a tie with Sammy Sosa for fifth on the career list and the White Sox pounded the Seattle Mariners 15-3 yesterday. After the game Griffey added, "It's weird," Griffey said. "I've watched Sammy throughout the years. Tying him, it's okay, I guess." Griffey's two-run drive in the second inning was his first since coming to Chicago from Cincinnati on July 31, and No. 609 for his career. Griffey, 13-time all-star, was just 9-for-43 with four RBIs and no extra-base hits for the White Sox entering the game. "I don't really worry about that," he said. "Everybody else does. I'm more concerned about getting hits and getting on base. You get hits and home runs happen. But it is good to get the first one at home." On July 31, 2008, at the MLB trade deadline, Griffey was traded to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar, ending his nine-year tenure in Cincinnati. In his first game against the Royals, he went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, a walk, and a run. However, Griffey had only 7 hits after that. Perhaps we have seen the awakening of "The Natural".
