The start of 2009 brought several new beginnings to the Chicago Force. Saturday, January 3 was the second and final scheduled tryout for new players. Approximately 30 aspiring rookies and 40 returning veterans were put through a vigorous three hour session held at Northeastern Illinois University on Chicago’s near north side.

Strength and conditioning Coach Ron Munvez, who deserves credit for his injury prevention program in 2008, got things rolling with a brisk stretching and warm up regimen. Next, under the guidance of new head coach John Konecki, and assistants Bill Smith, and Jerry Verde, the women were instructed to break off into small groups and report to stations that were set up to test their skills in the timed 40 yard dash, push ups, running agility, and pass catching prowess. Some found it too strenuous as they packed up and headed out the doors.

Others were thrilled for the chance. “Today was exciting and a little nerve-wracking,” said rookie Kristen Mertens who hopes to see time at receiver. “This is a great opportunity to do what I’ve dreamed about for a long time.”

The defending Eastern Conference Champion Force is no stranger to the media spotlight. Writer Kendahl Damico, Brittney Payton, the daughter of legendary Chicago Bear running back Walter Payton, and a camera crew were on hand as Brittney went through all of the drills to see if she‘s got what it takes to cut it. Freelance writer David Murray also was in attendance participating in all of the drills. He will continue his journey throughout the 2009 campaign as he writes an expose of women’s tackle football as seen through the eyes of a man, reminiscent of the George Plimpton “Paper Lion” chronicle. It’s still about three months until opening day April 11 on the road against the Iowa Crush. So far, Coach Konecki likes what he sees. “We are very happy with the turnout and especially glad that the veterans came out to show support and guidance,” explained Coach K. Tryouts are a beginning as coaches try to gauge the level of talent even though no one is in pads yet. “ From first impressions it appears that we have a tremendous amount of skilled athletes that hopefully can fill the holes created by the departure of key veterans,” added Coach K. “ We are excited and look forward to defending our crown and want a return trip to the National Championship game.”
