The Kane County Cougars take on the Clinton LumberKings
Written by John Dwyer    Sunday, 04 May 2008 10:48    PDF Print E-mail

On the most beautiful day so far in 2008, the Kane County Cougars were mauled 6-2 by the Clinton LumberKings in front of almost 7500 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The most impressive performances of the day were turned in by Derek Holland, the starting pitcher for the LumberKings, and Ian Gac, the veteran first baseman for the LumberKings.

After a victory last night, the Kane County Cougars continued their losing ways, falling 6-1 to the division leading Clinton LumberKings. The game was dominated by a strong performance from Derek Holland, the starting pitcher for the L'Kings.

The LumberKings got off to a quick start, with Tim Smith singling to bring home Engel Beltre. Cougars starting pitcher Jamie Richmond calmed down and managed to keep the L'Kings bats quiet for a while, but they struck again in the top of the third with a three run home run from Ian Gac, the league leader in home runs.

The Cougars were able to get one in the fifth to make the score 5-1, but the LumberKings quickly got the run back. The Cougars took one in the eighth, but were unable to threaten the lead.

The Cougars often end their games with a fireworks display that lights up the night sky, but the fireworks at the end of the game today were on the field. Relief pitcher Chad Kerfoot gave up a two-run home run to Engel Beltre, then plunked Renny Osuna, which prompted his ejection from the game. Manager Aaron Nieckula was tossed right after for arguing with home umpire Philip Henry.

The day for the Cougars continued to get worse, as Ian Gac blasted a three run home run that completely left the building. The Cougars tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, with a one out double from Cougars left fielder Michael Lissman that scored two, but the game ended with a final score of 11-4.
